Cervical Syndrome
-
Cervical Syndrome is a common disease. The series of symptoms are due to cervical internal and external deformation, which brings to pathological changes on the cervical and its surrounding nerves and blood vessels. Cervical Syndrome is recently grapping the attention of domestic and foreign medical profession. After thousands years of medical practice in our country, large number of medical writing including theory, clinical manifestations and treatment experience of cervical syndrome symptoms are passed down to us. Yet, due to historical reason and different system, there is no Chinese medical writing about cervical disease. However, after numerous practice and meticulous observation, our ancestors recorded in details of the symptoms and treatment method to each lesions of cervical spondylosis similar to what we encountered to day. The symptoms of cervical syndrome such as neck, shoulder and arm pain are mostly included in the country’s medical record. These symptoms are generally due to trauma, body recession, flu where dizziness, vertigo and tinnitus are mainly related to turbidness, liver wind and weakness.
Common causes of Cervical syndrome can be summarized as:
(1)Trauma: Damages to tendons, bones and skins after fell down or sprained. Neck and shoulder pain is referring ligaments, fascia, muscle, and other soft tissue injuries (including emergency, chronic injury) due to sprain and strain. It is also the symptoms of joint dislocation, the so-called displacement of two bones in a joint or strained tendon. Human body is a whole unit. When the neck and shoulder are injured due to external force, it will also cause internal organs and meridians disorder followed by a series of symptoms. Visible clinical symptoms of shoulder, back and limb pain are mainly on the pain itself. Apart from that, human organs are dependent on nourishment. If the circulation flow is blocked, the organ function will be affected due to lack of nutrition supply. The affected liver, kidneys, spleen and other internal organs will affect the bones, tendons, muscle and joint function instead. At that point of time, the symptoms are not merely the post-traumatic pain, it will also emerge various deficiency. Therefore, we must take note of visceral functions after injury, especially the factors of impaired spleen, liver and kidney functions.
(2)Numbness cause by cold and dampness, blocked meridian: When the three destructive factors, wind, coldness and dampness invaded the body, they will block the blood circulation and causes limb and joint pain, sore, numbness, and in serious condition, even unable to bend and stretch. Ancient physicians have summarized all these symptoms, including cervical disease symptoms as we mentioned, painful numbness, including most cervical disease and cervical spondylotic myelopathy symptoms. As long as one of the three destructive factors (wind, coldness and dampness) is very strong, that particular symptom will be very obvious. For example, pain and numbness are obvious indication of strong cold factor. Mainly happens on limbs and joint pain. Heat therapy will reduce the pain where cold contact will worsen the condition where unable to bend and move the joints. Medication should focus on relieve pain and chase away the coldness.
(3)Weak kidney and liver, deficiency of blood and energy : Frail body, weak kidney and meridian deficient in nutrients. This will cause puny limbs, feeble hands and feet, unable to exercise freely, weak liver and kidney as well as anemia. Other than unfavorable condition to the limbs, it will also cause tinnitus and vertigo. Besides weak kidney which failed to nourish liver and cause inadequate liver; high heat in the liver will also brings to dizziness and etc. Weak liver, kidney and anemic type of cervical spondylosis include vertebral artery type, root type and cervical spondylotic myelopathy type of the symptoms.
(4)Condensed phlegm, blocked meridian: Phlegm is the product of body pathological changes, which is the condensation of human fluid. Due to the dysfunction of lung, spleen, kidney together with the invasion of chill, fever and dampness, the circulation of body fluid is affected and concentrates on a certain area, which causes the energy and blood failed to circulate smoothly. This will again rise up the emergence of human dysfunction. The syndromes caused by condensed phlegm are very broad, it will cause different symptoms depends on the location of condensation. In different parts of the human body can give rise to different symptoms. Condensed phlegm at the head will cause vertigo whereas condensation at the limbs will cause numbness and pain. Clinical experiments found that sputum will cause vomiting, dizziness, sudden falls and numb limbs. Asthma will lead to bone pains, numbness, feeble limbs and coldness. These include a lot of symptoms of vertebral artery and cervical sympathetic diseases.
